This piece is one of the few Leonardo originals that I've had the privilege to see in person. It came to Victoria, British Columbia with a traveling Leonardo exhibit run by the Institut for Cultural Exchange in Germany. This depicts the first meeting of Jesus and St. John as infants. Jesus, on the left, is protected by Mary with her right hand while he offers a blessing to John. Mary's other hand is over the infant John, bringing him into her ring of protection. The pointing angel is suggestive of something more, outside the viewers range. This piece took nearly a quarter century to complete and is magnificent in it's chiaroscuro and aerial perspective.
