This is the last extant painting of Leonardo da Vinci's. The subjects youthful, androgynous looks were controversial in Leonardo's day because traditionally was a ruggedly masculine character portrayed surviving independently in the wilderness. By the time Leonardo produced this, his old age was becoming apparent. The hand pointing upwards had already been done and his smile seemed more like a smirk. But the ambiance about the piece still overwhelms these and this can be said to be Leonardo's grande finale.
