This panel served as a model for Leonardo's lost fresco "The Battle
of Anghiari". The fresco was to be in the Palazzo Vecchio, town hall for
Florence. The subject was a battle fought, and won, ny Florence against
their rival Milan. The full scale cartoon was completed and painting was
started, but once more Leonardo used an experimental technique, and once
more, the fresco was ruined. However another factor in the incompletion
of this piece was that fact that Leonardo was forced into working in the
same room as his artistic rival Michelangelo.
