This piece is the final product of a prolonged fascination. The earlier cartoon that included ST John and two others that have since been lost. This incomplete painting is likely the fourth treatment of the theme. Mary is leaning towards baby Jesus, but it is unclear whether she is supporting him, still naive to his future or if she is trying to pull him away from the weighty symbolism of the lamb.
